Who: Aurora Kasten
Year Graduated: 2011
Where are you now?
UC Santa Cruz
What do you enjoy?
Expressing myself through writing and fashion, pop culture and trying new foods.
What did you do in high school?
I was A&E editor for the San Mateo Hi. Other than that I didn’t participate in too many extracurricular activities…I was more interested in wearing weird outfits and goofing off than school most of the time.
What are you doing now?
Studying as many different subjects as I possibly can! I’m on track to major in Latin American/Latino Studies, but I/m also interested in media studies, Feminist studies, and philosophy. I’m also a member of the UCSC fashion Team, and we’re working on some fun creative projects.
What surprised you about life after high school?
College has taught me how much more in control of your education you are as an individual. There are so many more subjects to study in college and so many more opportunities. I feel the structure of public high school is really limiting, especially the emphasis on teaching standards, or teaching to test, rather than emphasizing learning and curiosity. In college, I feel much more engaged with what I’m learning and I don’t feel as much like some authority figure is telling me what or what not to do with my life.
Words of Wisdom for current Bearcats?
If you think high school sucks, don’t worry, it gets better! Use this time to work on your relationships with your teachers, friends and family. I don’t feel like high school taught me very much academically (at least not practical or important stuff), but I learned a lot more outside the classroom. You’re still young and it’s okay to make some mistakes. If you leave high school with better judgment than when you started, I’d say it was worth it.
