What did you do in high school?
It seems like a long time ago but it has only been four years. I was a member of La Raza Unida Club, in my senior year I was the treasurer for the club. I took biotech for three years, and you could say that I was the founder of La Esquina Latina section in the school newspaper, the San Mateo Hi.
What are you doing now?
I am about to graduate from UC Davis, majoring in Genetics. I have also been working at the Genome Center on campus for the past three years. I have been working on a project to find a domestication gene in lettuce. This gene is involved in changing the leaf structure of lettuce from a wild structure to a domesticated structure.
What surprised you about life after high school?
One of the things that surprised be about life after high school and going into college, is just how much control you have over the classes you take. Another surprise was just the number of opportunities that you have after high school and also just the number of choices you need to do when you are living away from home.
Any words of wisdom for current Bearcats?
The journey through life is more important then the destination. If there is something that you are very passionate about keep working on it and don’t give up, even if you have a hiccup in the road you will eventually get there and be rewarded with something great.
